Do we all have the capacity to do evil?

"The evil I am talking about lives in us all. It takes hold of the individual, in private lives, within a family, and then it's the children who suffer most. And then, when conditions are right, in different countries, at different times, a terrible cruelty, a viciousness against life erupts, and everyone is surprised by the depth of hatred within himself. Then it sinks back and waits. It's something in our hearts."(Black Dogs, Ian McEwan, 1992 Pan Books)
These words from McEwans evocative book about the existence of evil in the individual, the family, communities and political systems point to the fact that we all have it in us to do evil if the conditions are right. Perhaps Stuart was just an ordinary man who did an evil thing when he was pushed one step too far? What do you think?
